Kapur & Associates began reestablishing control and piecing together topography and as-builts along a huge project corridor in early July 2017.  This highly publicized and very anticipated project stretches from Bloomington, Indiana to Martinsville, Indiana, and is now being completed by a new contractor taking over the project.  The control we are establishing and the existing data we are acquiring is critical to resuming construction activities, and assists the design and construction teams with updated surfaces and information to aid in future decisions, staging, and budget.

Many developments over the past few decades have caused significant change in the land surveying profession. These developments include major advancements in technology, increased requirements for professional licensure, and a decline in the availability of land surveying programs at colleges and universities. Other professions appear to be encroaching into what has traditionally been perceived to be the territory of the land surveying profession.
It is time for the land surveying profession to begin defining how the profession will sustain over the next couple of decades. Hopefully, this will be embraced as by the profession as opportunities for growth rather than just defending turf.

This seminar will examine all three aspects of the surveying profession: the technical world, the business world, and the legal world. The technical world includes statistics, minimum standards, and suggestions of embracing new technology. The business world involves incorporation, bookkeeping, the surveyor/client relationship, marketing, and entrepreneurial skills. The legalworld involves understanding statutes and case law, discussions of what laws govern surveyors, and an in-depth discussion of negligence and professional liability.

PDHs = 1, Speaker:  Tony Gregory Many developments over the past several decades have caused significant change in the land surveying profession. These developments include major advancements in technology. Our profession has embraced and incorporated these advancements into our practices. This is evident in both the common field work and office methodologies of the typical land surveyor.
In as much as staying current with technology is both commendable and necessary, the surveyor of the 21st century needs to not lose sight of the historic charge given to every professional land surveyor, that being to sift through boundary evidence in order to “follow the footsteps of the original surveyor.” The purpose of this seminar is to focus on how the land surveyor can be an expert in both the use of changing technologies and in interpreting boundary evidence.

Safety on the job is really a function of just two primary things: promoting a culture of safety and taking personal responsibility for your safety and for those around you. While we can talk about all of the factors that can go into a good safety program – training, safety plans, equipment, safety manuals, hazard communication and so on - none if it matters if the company and/or the employees do not care. Aside from the obvious wish to return safely to our families every night, this program will look at the practical concerns that companies and individuals need to consider in the daily activities and in their safety programs.

The survey and the transference are the distinctive and operative acts in the transmission of real property and, where they differ from each other, one must of necessity control the other.  This session addresses the aforementioned concepts by external explanations in order to understand the discrepancies between them.  It also helps to avoid expensive and wasteful litigation over boundaries that were previously not in conflict.

During the next several years enhancements and additions to the network of Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) including: the U.S. NAVSTAR Global Positioning System, Russian GLONASS, European Union GALILEO and China's BeiDou will significantly improve the use of space-based positioning systems for surveying, mapping, charting, navigation and innumerable other applications. In order to meet the anticipated demands for an improved geospatial framework that these developments will require, the National Geodetic Survey (NGS) is implementing a plan for the modernization of the National Spatial Reference System (NSRS). Among the various topics outlined in this plan is the adoption of an entirely new geodetic reference frame with updated geometric (horizontal) and gravimetric (vertical) realizations that will replace the North American Datum of 1983 (NAD 83), the North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD 88) and the several island vertical datums. The new framework will be designed such that the geometric component (latitude, longitude, ellipsoid height) will be virtually identical to and aligned with the International Terrestrial Reference Frame (ITRF), while orthometric heights will be based exclusively on a nation-wide high accuracy (1-2 cm) gravimetric geoid model. This presentation highlights the rational for these changes; the various elements that currently define the NSRS and the activities NGS is engaged in to improve the capacity of and access to the NSRS.
